An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legal document that outlines the special education services your child will receive at school. For children with autism, a strong IEP can be the bridge between therapy gains and classroom success.
Eligibility basics
To qualify, your child needs an educational evaluation showing that autism impacts their ability to learn in a general education setting. A medical diagnosis alone does not guarantee an IEP, but it is strong supporting evidence.
What an IEP can include
- Speech, occupational, or social-work services
- Specialized instruction in reading, writing, or math
- Behavioral supports and accommodations
- Sensory breaks and transition supports
