Starting kindergarten is a big transition for any child, and it can feel overwhelming for families raising a child with autism. A little planning goes a long way.

    Six months before school

    • Request an IEP meeting to discuss kindergarten placement
    • Visit potential classrooms and meet the teacher
    • Begin practicing school routines: lining up, eating lunch, using the bathroom

    One month before school

    • Share a one-page strengths-and-needs profile with the team
    • Ask about visual schedules, sensory supports, and transition plans
    • Schedule a meet-and-greet with the bus driver if applicable

    After school starts

Expect some regression. It is normal. Keep communication open with the teacher, and let your BCBA know how the days are going so we can adjust therapy goals to support the transition.
